Bruce Thompson was educated at Newcastle High School in Staffordshire and attended Oxford University where he studied Classics. He played rugby at school and college but switched to rowing representing the university lightweight eight and being part of the Boat Race squad. He taught at Cheltenham College for eleven years as Head of Classics and coached both the 1st XV and the 1st VII.
At Cheltenham he was particularly involved in introducing weight training programmes for the 1st XV some time before this was common practice. He moved to Scotland in 1994 as Deputy Rector of Dollar Academy where he coached the 2nd XV and helped coach the 1st XV squad for six years before moving to Strathallan where he has been Head for fifteen years. He still takes weight training sessions and coaches at the school.
He is the Scottish representative on the Headmasters’ Conference Sports Committee, has extensive links in sports education and has organised a national conference on sport. He also chaired the HMC Committee which looked into Rugby safety issues liaising closely with the SRU.
