CROSS URGES WILLING WALKERS TO TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE PDF Print
Thursday, 29 April 2010
Simon Cross, the Edinburgh Rugby flanker, is urging rugby clubs to take up a challenge with a difference next month.

Cross is Scottish Rugby’s ambassador for the Poppyscotland Hearts and Heroes Challenge, a 12 hour walking or running challenge, across a 29 mile section of the Southern Upland Way in the Borders, which will take place on Saturday 15 May.

Cross said: “I’m really passionate about this event – proceeds from it go to two causes close to my heart: Poppyscotland, which helps veterans from the armed forces; and Hearts and Balls, which assists injured rugby players.

“This event can be competitive, but it can be done in shorter sections with 12 and 21 miles categories also available.  Above all it’s an experience that can be enjoyed by all the family.  I’m looking at putting in a team from Murrayfield Wanderers, where I coach, but I’m also looking at a team involving my fiancée, my parents and her parents,” he added.

Starting point is St Mary’s Loch with the 12 mile section ending at Traquair, the 21 miles section at Yair, near Selkirk and the finishing line at Melrose Rugby Club at the Greenyards.

Last year, in the inaugural event, more than 500 people took part raising almost a quarter of a million pounds.

Entries are still being accepted.  For more information on how you or your club can take part please log on to www.heartsandheroes.co.uk  or contact John Thorburn on 07929 655132.
