Scottish Rugby is saddened to learn of the death of Jake Borthwick, one of the last surviving members of the 1938 Scotland Triple Crown winning squad. He was 96. Jake Borthwick was born in Edinburgh and educated at Stewart's College and Edinburgh University. As a prop he represented Stewarts FP, the Co-optimists, Edinburgh and Scotland, winning two caps in the Murrayfield victories over Wales and Ireland in 1938. During the Second World War he served in West Africa and at the cessation of hostilities he returned to his medical duties, working as a consultant physician at Peel Hospital in Galashiels from 1950-1976. He was awarded the MBE for medical services. A Galashiels resident, he remained a committed supporter of Stewarts FP, frequently spectating when they played in the Borders. Scottish Rugby extends its sincere sympathies to all those who knew Jake Borthwick. |
