Scottish Rugby is saddened to learn of the death of our oldest internationalist, Mac Henderson, who passed away at the weekend, aged 101. James McLaren Henderson, known as Mac, enjoyed a 100% winning record in a Scotland jersey. He was capped three times for Scotland in the back five of the pack against Wales, England and Ireland in 1933.
He was the first of Scotland’s 1013 internationalists to become a centenarian and, as recently as last November, was back at Murrayfield (pictured above) with members of his family to meet players from both the Scotland and New Zealand teams. Born at Elphinstone near Tranent and educated at Edinburgh Academy, Henderson who farmed in East Lothian and also in New Zealand, played his club rugby mainly for Edinburgh Accies but also for Dunbar and Haddington. He also represented the Barbarians, as did his brothers, Ian and Ronnie. Ian, a prop, also played for his country, winning eight caps between 1939 and 1948. To mark his 100th birthday in 2007, Scottish Rugby held a lunch in Mac Henderson’s honour at Murrayfield Stadium. Scottish Rugby extends its sincere sympathies to Mac Henderson’s family and friends. |
