Scottish Rugby is saddened to learn of the death this week of former Scotland lock David Gray.  He was 56.

Gray, 6ft 8ins and 17st 10lbs, was the proverbial man mountain in his playing days and was a key figure in a formidable West of Scotland and Glasgow pack that also included British Lions and fellow Scotland caps Sandy Carmichael and the late Gordon Brown.

Gray won nine caps for Scotland, making his debut against England at Murrayfield in 1978.
He then faced Ireland, France and New Zealand in 1979; all of Scotland’s opponents in the 1980 Five Nations Championship; and, his last appearance, against France in 1981.

Born in Kilmarnock and educated at Kilmarnock Academy, Gray also played for Kilmarnock and Ayrshire and followed his brother, Ian, also a lock, into the Scotland B team.

Scottish Rugby extends its sincere condolences to David Gray’s family and friends.
