Here you can find information on getting started in your coaching career and courses and updates to help develop you as a coach.

RUGBY READY

As a coach, player, referee or administrator we all have a duty of care to ensure that we participate in the game in as safe a manner as possible. As such we recommend that everyone involved in the game at all levels completes the self check safety resource produced by the IRB - RugbyReady. Scottish Rugby was proud to assist the IRB in the production of this quality resource - please encourage all at your club and school to become RugbyReady.

COACHING QUALIFICATIONS

“I finished my UKCC level two in May and it was great. I was really impressed. I’ve seen now the quality of the coach education packages Scottish Rugby has and I drive my boys into that, firstly because it’ll inform their coaching and secondly because it’ll improve their playing.

“I went to one [coach update] last week and, forget rugby, the content from that was completely transferable to a range of other activities.

“I think Scottish Rugby are much more switched on to the fact that there’s an opportunity to develop school coaches and teachers like no other sport in Scotland and I think Scottish Rugby is at the forefront.

“I don’t see any other sporting bodies offering me or any of my colleague in my department offering me the kind of things that Scottish Rugby are."

Scottish Rugby runs many coaching courses aimed at all levels of the game. Our aim is to ensure that every player from mini to adult has the opportunity to develop to their full potential by receiving coaching from qualified, up to date coaches who are continually seeking to improve their coaching knowledge, skills and attributes.

Our courses range from Foundation level for Mini coaches (primary school age) through to the new UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) programmes at levels 1,2 and 3.

Details of the courses on offer can be found on the corresponding pages.

We also run a series of Coaching Updates throughout the season on various topics around the country. These updates are designed to enable coaches to continually develop their technical knowledge and gain new ideas for their coaching.

To assist teachers and coaches at all levels we offer free coaching downloads on a variety of topics which can help provide ideas and session content.

Scottish Rugby, in conjunction with the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA), is proud to have launched the SRU/UKSCA Level 1 Weightlifting course. Details of this course and other Strength & Conditioning courses are available on the Strength & Conditioning sub page.

Throughout the country there exists a coaching network of Local Authority Coaching Development Officers who can assist in helping coaches develop including providing Financial Scholarships for course fees. Contact details can be found on the Network Contact page.

Coaching opportunities is a page dedicated for clubs seeking coaches and coaches seeking clubs. Please see the page for further information on this service.
