Introduction
The Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Weightlifting and Plyometrics has been developed in conjunction with the UK Strength & Conditioning Association (UKSCA). It is a stand-alone Strength & Conditioning course. It is a practical competency based course looking at practical aspects of coaching Weightlifting and Plyometrics with rugby players.

Qualification Aim
To deliver and coach Weightlifting & Plyometrics techniques and plan sessions for players in a safe and well structured training environment.

Course Structure
4 day course over 2 weekends: - including assessment and certification on the 4th day

 

Level 2 Certificate in Weightlifting
OBJECTIVES

Level 2 qualififed Strength & Conditioning Coaches will be able to:

• Describe, coach and demonstrate a warm-up session aimed at preparing an athlete for gym based speed, agility or conditioning activities.

• Identify common errors in posture and movement and apply strategies to correct these.

• Describe, coach & demonstrate collection, start, descent, ascent, return, posture/alignment, breathing, safety, spotting and dropping in relation to the Snatch and associated derivatives.

• Describe, coach and demonstrate start position, grip, stance, ascent, descent, posture/alignment, breathing, safety, and dropping in relation to the Clean and Jerk and associated derivatives.

• Describe, coach & demonstrate start position, grip, stance, ascent, descent, posture/alignment, breathing, safety, and dropping in relation to combination exercises and assistance exercises included in a varied programme.

• Identify key issues in session design, and design appropriate & safe training sessions directed at specific objectives

• Plan an appropriate session structure to meet defined session aims in relation to plyometrics & conditioning for explosive movements.

• Identify basic principles of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning and understand the underlying physiological principles.

The above proven competencies should enable a Strength & Conditioning coach to practice within the auspices of their rugby club or school. It is indicative of a coach’s ability to operate independently and lead Strength & Conditioning sessions competently.

QUALIFICATION OUTLINE

The Course operates as a four day course (usually over 2 weekends). The Course is practically based and you will be expected to lift, demonstrate and develop your coaching of the core lifts and participate in the Plyometrics exercises throughout the course. The Course also offers a series of theoretical presentations on the physiological aspects and planning aspects of Strength & Conditioning for rugby.

ASSESSMENT

There is an assessment on day 4 of the course which will consist of a Weightlifting practical (demonstrations & coaching task), Plyometrics practical, (demonstration & explanation of 2 drills selected at random from a ‘toolbox’), and a programming & planning presentation.

PREREQUISITES

Candidates are required to be 16 years of age or over before they can be registered for qualification. It is recommended that intending participants should already have achieved the SRU/UKSCA Level 1 Certificate.

Application
For coaches working within our clubs and affiliated schools, the course costs £150 INC vat. Note - applicants must state which club / school they are working with on their application.

For coaches who are not working within our clubs and affiliated schools the course costs £250 INC vat - this is in line with UKSCA course costs. 

Completed application forms must be attached with a cheque made out to “Scottish Rugby” for the above amount. Please send in applications (including cheques) to Jennifer Dailly at the address below.

Participants receive a Level 2 Course Booklet and a DVD of the core lifting techniques & plyometric techniques.

There will be a maximum uptake for each Course of 24 participants.

Payment for your course should be made in advance, or your place cannot be guaranteed. Unfortunately, no refund will be offered should candidates withdraw prior to the start of the course. We will however endeavour to place you on an alternative course at a later date. Please note - applications must be submitted with payment or email and contact address for invoice as places will not be allocated without.
