Border Reivers U16 15 A last minute Sam Hidalgo-Clyne drop goal saw Edinburgh begin their Under 16 Inter District Programme with an 18-15 win over Border Reivers at Philiphaugh, Selkirk. In a match hampered by a strong wind blowing down the ground Edinburgh made a good start, despite playing against the elements, when early pressure resulted in Alex Hagart kicking a penalty. After this promising start both teams took time to settle down as neither side were able to hold on to possession long enough to threaten their opponents try line. Reivers eventually made the conditions tell with a fifteen point burst in the final ten minutes on the half. First James Stewart then Shawn Muir forced their way over the try line from close range, and Josh Welsh added a conversion and a penalty to put the Reivers ahead 15-3. Despite the disappointing end to the first half, a twelve point lead didn’t look enough for the Borders and Edinburgh, showing a willingness to move the ball quickly away from contact areas, especially following turnovers, and use the full width of the pitch, were back on level midway through the second half. First Scott Black forced his way over then Angus White picked a great line and scampered twenty metres for a try converted by Alex Hagart. With the wind at their backs and time on their side Edinburgh were in the box seat but, despite creating good scoring chances, they were unable to deliver the final blow. With time running out they looked to have missed their last chance when penalised in the Reivers 22. The kick went out of play but there was still time for the line-out and a good steal gave Edinburgh one final opportunity. The ball was driven into the Reivers 22 and when the attack was stopped Hidalgo-Clyne gave himself space and coolly slotted the winning drop goal from thirty metres. Edinburgh: |
