Without a question of doubt, there are few locations anywhere in World for a game of rugby that surpass Aboyne village green on a bright, slightly frosty, blue sky, spring morning. The sheer buzz of activity of the S1 and S2 rugby games, played between Deeside and the Aberdeen Grammar Club last Sunday, seemed somehow to be focused and amplified by the tranquillity of the surrounding snow capped hills. Altogether, the spectators were treated to two thrilling games of rugby with a total of twenty three tries. The S2’s played first and in a close fought game that could have gone either way, eventually emerged winners with two late tries that sealed the game at 45 points to 33. This was a satisfying win for the S2, as several players were unavailable due to injuries picked up the previous week and also because out of three matches played this year against Aberdeen’s number one club Deeside have won on all three occasions. The S1 game was also very competitive, although the side was slightly under strength with some of the regular forwards unavailable. Grammar scored four tries in the first half and Deeside scored three. But in the second half Grammar proved slight stronger with some of their powerful backs managing to wear down and break through Deeside’s usually tenacious defence. The final score of 22 points to 46 was a much better result for Deeside S1’s than their last encounter with the Aberdeen club. Connor Bull, Tyler Booth and Jamie Hillier all put in big performances. S1 and S2 training will resume on the lower pitch at Tillybrake, on 25th of April, followed by a combined S1/S2 game away to Garioch. This is followed on the 3rd of May by the Mackie 7’s.
