Newcastle Falcons U16 5 – Edinburgh U16 6 Newcastle were finding it difficult to handle Edinburgh’s accuracy and effectiveness at the contact area, led by Angus White, and it wasn’t too long before a penalty came and centre Alex Hagart slotted from 30 metres out to give the visitors the lead. Newcastle created the more clear cut try scoring opportunities in the first half, but some excellent last line tackles from John Rae and Ewan Naysmith kept the Falcons academy side scoreless at half time. The second half started with Newcastle increasing their tempo and intensity, and it wasn’t long before a series of rucks produced some quick ball and some quick feet from a Newcastle centre to race to the line from 30 metres to put the home side 5-3 ahead. Edinburgh controlled their possession well as the second half wore on, retaining ball and pinning the Newcastle back three in with some big kicks from Hagart and Sam Hidalgo-Clyne. It was Hagart that put Edinburgh in the lead with his second penalty with only minutes to go, after powerful and direct running from the Edinburgh forwards. Despite confusion at the kick off and a near penalty miss from the Newcastle replacement stand off the Edinburgh side held on to win 6 – 5. Although the score didn’t reflect it, the game was open and entertaining and credit goes to both side for playing some good rugby. Edinburgh will draw the positives from this game and try to improve on the weaknesses looking to the last game of the programme at home to Caledonia next Sunday at Dunbar when they kick off first in the IDC double header at 1.30pm.
