Scottish Exiles U20 travelled to play in an International Festival in Belgium recently as part of the Scotland U20 selection process. This fantastic opportunity came from an invitation from the Belgium Union was three other countries - France, Germany and Scotland. So the Exiles travelled in the guise of a Scotland Select XV. The players met at the start of the week for the first time and had a light session in Regents Park before travelling to Belgium via Eurostar the next day. The first game was played in the Leige RFC stadium against the host Belgian team in temperatures of 38c. The Exiles started well with good attacking shape and some excellent running particularly from Doug Billam (Paviors) and Callum MacBurnie (Moseley); but failed to take their chances and the Belgian's grew in confidence backed by a supportive crowd. It took Scotland 30 minutes to score the first points with a superb try by Chris Thompson(Loughborough University). The big Belgian side continued to perform well in the tight and it was not until the second half that the Exiles stretched their lead with tries from Russell Weir (Captain, Loughborugh Univ), Angus Tester (Durham University) and late in the game by Lewis Patterson(Launceston). Belgium were rewarded with a try for their efforts with a try in the last few seconds of the game. France beat the German side easily and with this full time national side have set up a wonderful final against the Scottish Exiles on Saturday.
