Aimed at players, coaches, match officials, administrators and unions, IRB Rugby Ready is a free online self-assessment programme that raises awareness of good practice. The emphasis is on safety while ensuring that all players gain maximum enjoyment from the game.

Similar to the Rugby Smart (in New Zealand) and SmartRugby (in Australia) initiatives, Rugby Ready is a resource for all those involved in rugby, across the globe – more than three million people in over a hundred countries now play the game. Since its launch in October 2007, IRB Rugby Ready has been accessed by over 129,000 separate users.

The programme is made up of 17 modules that cover match preparation and physical conditioning, correct technique, and injury prevention and management. The online assessment is mandatory for:

• All teachers, coaches and referees involved in rugby.
• All players applying for exceptions – this is compulsory for all U16 in U18 rugby and U18 in senior rugby.
