The Borders Reivers suffered a disappointing defeat in their opening Under 17 Development match, going down to Edinburgh 43-0 at Murrayfield on Wednesday evening.

Reivers started brightly and dominated the opening exchanges without breaching the Edinburgh line, but were stung with a try in Edinburgh first attack when Ewan Naismith went over in the right corner. Edinburgh then took charge of possession and territory, pinning The Reivers into their own half. Any possession gained by the visitors was quickly turned over, enhancing Edinburgh’s superiority, and it was no surprise when wing John Rae crossed for the second try mid-way through the half.

While the Reivers pack competed with some success at the set piece, the slick Edinburgh backline continued to create problems for the Reivers defence as Rae added two further tries early in the second half to complete his hat-trick. Fellow wing Michael Firozzi joined Rae on the score sheet mid-way through the half and while the Reivers did have a spell of pressure in the home twenty two, the Edinburgh defence held firm and the home side rounded off the match with two late tries from Max Johnson and Sam Goodrich.

The Reivers will now need to regroup before facing Caledonia at Murrayfield next Wednesday evening.
