Under 18's Win Opener PDF Print
Monday, 22 February 2010

This, the first of the matches in the National Selection Programme was played at Hallhill, Dunbar, on Sunday. Originally scheduled for Myreside, it was moved on Friday due to weather conditions. Even then it was touch and go on early Sunday morning, but in the end conditions were good, dry and sunny.

Both teams had had their preparation programme disrupted by weather and both were short of one or two players. In their warm-up games, Glasgow had beaten the Exiles whilst Edinburgh had lost to Newcastle Falcons.

The early exchanges were mostly mid-field with neither side gaining any real control. The break down area was fiercely contested and both sides were keen to move the ball along the backs but the defences stood firm.

It was therefore something of a surprise when Edinburgh hooker, George Turner intercepted a loose ball near the half way line and burst clear to score an unconverted try.

Glasgow replied with a good back move which was only stopped by a good covering tackle from Scott McKean, the Edinburgh fullback.

Edinburgh then had a period of sustained pressure which eventually brought another try scored by Andy Philp from a forward drive, following a line-out on the Glasgow line. The try was again not converted

Half-time 10—0 to Edinburgh

Glasgow restarted the second half with determination and caused Edinburgh some problems with sustained pressure only relieved by a penalty for holding on.

Edinburgh regained their composure and although winning a plentiful supply of ball, never quite got the break through it needed to make the game safe.

However pressure told and after good work from Malcolm Peacock and Lawrie Seydak, Jamie Lauder scored wide out for Scott Mullins to bring out full points from the touch-line.

Both sides were ringing the changes by this time and the match finished with Edinburgh the victors by 17—0
