Under 17's Defeat Caledonia PDF Print
Friday, 26 February 2010

Edinburgh completed their 2009-10 programme with a gritty performance in heavy rain at Murrayfield on Wednesday night. Earlier in the day snow and lying water had to be cleared to enable the fixture to go ahead.

The match was stop and start for the first 20 minutes as both teams struggled to come to grips with the conditions. Edinburgh managed to win a 5 metre scrum following some aggressive build up play from the black pack. The scrum held solid and the George Watson’s College No 8 Rhys Davies showed good body position and leg drive to score, the conversion was missed. Both teams were trying their best to play some rugby and move in into the wider channels at every opportunity, but it was the Edinburgh forwards who shone out, well organized use of slow ball through pick and go’s along with some nice kicks from Sam Hidalgo-Clyne kept the Caledonia team pinned back. Following one of these kicks into the corner, the resulting lineout ball was loose and after a series of attempts for the line, Hiladgo-Clyne emerged amongst a pile of bodies having scored his sides 2nd try.  Having kicked an earlier penalty to bring the score to 13 – 0, this now gave the Edinburgh players a buffer as they kept working hard to up the intensity and make the best of any attacking opportunity. After being awared a scrum 30 metres out, Davies again picked as the scrum wheeled up on the tight and this time showed good speed and determination to run from the base and score. Hagart converted to make the score 20 – 0. Caledonia pressurized Edinburgh right to the end and were unlucky not to get on the score board themselves, but the Edinburgh fringes stood strong and repelled the many attacks.

The Edinburgh Management would like to thank all of the players for their effort and application throughout the programme and wish the boys who go on to play for the Scotland Under 17 all the best for their programme.
