The Reivers Under 18’s bounced back from last week’s defeat at Caledonia with a spirited three tries to nil 24-3 victory over Glasgow at Walkerburn. The Reivers pack fiercely contested every possession and kept Glasgow on the back foot for much of the match, and it was the props, Robin Hislop and Gavin Robertson, who shared the tries. The Reivers opened well as snow flakes blew around the ground, and a great break by Stuart Hogg took play into the Glasgow 22. The visitors were soon penalised, and though Hogg hooked his effort at the posts, the Reivers didn’t have to wait long to open the scoring. Hislop and Rory Sutherland were prominent in releasing Robertson to crash over for the opening try with Josh Welsh adding the conversion. Glasgow replied with a good penalty from wide on the right by Mark Bennett and exerted some pressure midway through the half when Hislop was sin-binned, but scrambling defence kept the visitors out, and the Reivers captain returned to make amends in first half injury time after a catch and drive from a line-out five metres out saw Hislop dive over for a try, again converted by Welsh. Reivers still had time to test the Glasgow defence once more before the break, resulting in another penalty in the visitors twenty two, however Welsh was wide with the last kick of the half leaving Reivers 14-3 ahead. Reivers continue to control possession at the start of the second half and another penalty under the posts ten minutes in saw Welsh stretch the lead to 17-3. Injuries to an already depleted back line saw No.8 Nagle move to centre but this suited the conditions and the situation as the home side continued to drive at their visitors, with Glasgow getting only fleeting glimpses of the Reivers 22. Hislop was again on hand to secure the win with his second try following concerted pressure on the Glasgow line as the prop showed his strength to power over near the posts with eight minutes left. Craig Dods took over the kicking duties to add the conversion. Glasgow threw caution to the wind in the final exchanges and were able to breach the front line defence on occasions, however the spirit and determination of the Reivers defence ensured all attacks were repulsed.
