From Kirkcaldy, to Stirling and finally St Andrews before a playable ground was found, with ground conditions very good and a cold wind blowing across the pitch. Both sides had won the previous week and were obviously eager to continue their winning ways. The wind did not give either team a great advantage and the opening stages were evenly contested although Edinburgh missed an early penalty. Edinburgh pinned Caledonia back near their 22 with a series of pick and drives but a turn-over offered Caledonia the chance to clear, however quick following up created a charge-down by Fergus Scott who picked up and scored under the posts, Scott Mullins converting. 7-0 The kick off failed to go 10 allowing Edinburgh to move back into the red-zone where Scott Mullins kicked a good penalty 10-0 Caledonia re-grouped and gradually got the upper hand at the break down pinning Edinburgh back in their 22. It was only a matter of time before Caledonia were rewarded with a converted try. 10-7 This spurred Caledonia on to greater efforts and just on half-time they took the lead with another forward orientated converted try. 10-14 Unfortunately Edinburgh had lost Scott Mullins and Stuart Smith to injury to be replaced by Fraser Gillies & Ben Johnstone respectively during the first half. The second half opened in similar fashion to the first with the home forwards dictating the play. However one or two penalties allowed Edinburgh to get a foothold in the Caledonia 22. This seemed to give them heart and for the first time they started to impose themselves on the opposition defence. The pressure told and a penalty was duly converted by Fraser Gillies. 13-14. Soon afterwards a second offence allowed Edinburgh and Fraser Gillies to regain the lead. 16-14 Chris Scott had by now retired injured to be replaced by Robbie Wilson, this and changes by both sides took some of the continuity out of the game with much of the play in mid-field. Going into the closing minutes, it was Caledonia who started to get on top again and good field position gave them the chance to kicks two late penalties. Final score 16-20 A disappointing result from Edinburgh’s point of view but injuries did affect our shape and hopefully some of these players will have recovered for the final game against the Border Reivers at Hallhill, Dunbar next Sunday.
