Edinburgh travelled to Newcastle to take on the Falcons Under 16 side on Sunday, in preparation for next weeks Under 16 Identification Fixtures, and came away with a narrow victory in a keenly contested match. Both teams struggled to deal with the wet and windy conditions, resulting in a number of handling errors throughout the match, but Edinburgh, with the elements in their favour, were first on the scoreboard after good possession in their own half saw the visitors break down the right wing and good hands put Dominic Johnston over for a try, converted by Ally Fraser after ten minutes. The home side came roaring back and converted an easy penalty after Edinburgh failed to roll away at a tackle, reducing the deficit to 7-3. The Falcons continued to build the pressure and had their best spell leading up to half-time, however solid Edinburgh defence ensured there was no further scoring at the break. Newcastle continued on the front foot after the interval and the visitors were deemed to be off their feet at a ruck, resulting in another successful penalty in front of the posts. Within minutes a further penalty saw the home team take the lead for the first time in the match. Edinburgh battled to get back in front but were lacking accuracy in the final pass, however the visitors determination paid off when Newcastle were caught with hands in the ruck and Andrew McMillan stepped up to slot the 3 points. Edinburgh were in the ascendancy in the closing stages, but were unable to add to their one point lead. |
