Edinburgh completed their U18 National Selection Programme with an ultimately comfortable 25-15 victory over Border Reivers at Hallhill, on Sunday. Edinburgh had to withstand some early Reivers pressure and Josh Welsh put the visitors ahead with a penalty after nine minutes. Edinburgh didn’t take long to respond as they capitalised on a Reivers mistake in midfield and the ball was moved wide for Harris Jones to cross for a try converted by Fraser Gillies. Sloppy play at a line-out allowed Reivers back into the lead as Rory Sutherland grabbed a loose throw and raced over from twenty five metres, but Edinburgh gradually took control and Fraser Gillies landed a penalty to put Edinburgh 10-8 ahead. Three minutes before the break Edinburgh went further ahead after a series of drives close to the line had sucked in the Reivers defence, the ball was flashed across the Edinburgh back-line for Jones to cross for his second try. Gillies soon increased the lead with a penalty in the opening minute of the second half, and though Edinburgh dominated possession and territory, a lack of composure near the Reivers line prevented any further scoring until Lawrie Seydak powered over with ten minutes remaining. Gillies again adding the conversion. Reivers did come back with a Stuart Hogg try and conversion near the end but Edinburgh always looked comfortable in the closing minutes. EDINBURGH U18 |
