The final of North Schools Rugby Under-18 Cup took place at Duff House Grounds, Banff, with Gordonstoun coming from behind in the final minute to score the winning try.

Gordonstoun turned up with a truly international squad. In addition to Scottish, Welsh and English players, there were representatives from France, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Belize, Mexico, Bermuda, Egypt, Malta and the USA in the squad - many of them had little rugby experience before coming to Gordonstoun.

The first half was very even with both sides trying to gain the upper hand.  The only difference being when Mackie/Portlethen took the lead with a try from their captain, Matthew Drelzie, mid-way through the half, 0-5.

Gordonstoun couldn't to take advantage with several penalty misses and were stopped from scoring on a number of occasions by stout defending from Mackie/Portlethen.

HALF TIME: 0-5

In the second-half Gordonstoun started to produce some good attacking rugby but yet again failing to score before Mackie/Portlethen went further ahead when they broke out and Gordonstoun conceded a penalty - Mackie/Portlethen’s Ewan Brumwell converted to make the score, 0-8.

However, Gordonstoun were not to be thwarted and came back to press on the Mackie line several times, only for a pass to go astray or Mackie/Portlethen to turn the ball over and clear their line.

With minutes left and Mackie/Portlethen beginning to tire, Gordonstoun scored through Maltease Andrew McHarg to bring his side back into contention, 5-8.

With the referee indicating that the next play would be the last of the game Gordonstoun mounted yet another attack and managed again to break the Mackie/Portlethen defence and, while numerous chances previous had gone begging, Californian Alex Fetner crossed the whitewash to see Gordonstoun retain the cup they won last season.

FINAL SCORE: 10-8
