Gytes Gossip PDF Print
Wednesday, 25 August 2010

The firsts lasted out a late revival from Kirkcaldy to claim a rare win at Beveridge Park to get their season off to a winning start. All 19 in the match day squad came through Peebles High School and the club learning process, a very rare event in these days of upwardly mobile players. Assistant coach, Gerry McGuinness and the management were happy enough to come away with a win at a ground which has been a bit of a bogey in recent seasons. There are things to sort out, probably including some hard work on the scrummage machine in advance of the first game at the Gytes this season when newly promoted Falkirk will want to continue their winning ways after a close, high scoring win against StewMel last week.

The welcome news is that the erroneously awarded red to the Peebles No 8 has been rescinded very quickly by Murrayfield.

This season at the Gytes there will be catering at all home 1st team games, shared between risotto2go and Square Meals who will supply a selection of hot and cold beverages and tasty hot snacks during the game. Tomorrow, and the following week, Square Meals, www.squaremealstoyou.co.uk, will be on site to provide the fayre at pitchside. This is only one of their range of catering packages that they offer. You can get more info on their web site.

The membership secretary will be available at the Gytes entrance to take any additional membership subscriptions and distribute any membership cards not already delivered. If you are paying on 28th be sure to arrive early enough to pay and get into see the start of the first league home game, which will be against newly promoted Falkirk.

The seconds had a pre-season friendly last Wednesday and faired well against Penicuik, losing out narrowly. Disturbing was that Graham Hogarth joins his brother on the red card list for something that invokes the well known Victor Meldrew catch phrase “I do not believe it”. Yes you have guessed it – it was the same as brother Neil’s offence last season, speaking to referee with the wrong selection of words; similar to an incident in Kirkcaldy?? With the new instructions to referees and their assistants, maybe Peebles players need to learn how to bite their tongues and say nothing; always remember that players make a lot more mistakes than referees do. Tomorrow they start their league campaign against city side, Boroughmuir at Hay Lodge Park, which for the 1st time in 3 years should see more than a couple of games in a season.

The colts had mixed results at the two sevens tournaments at the weekend, reaching the semi finals at Langholm on Saturday, but not getting past the 1st round at Melrose on Sunday, when they got on the wrong side of the referee and claimed an early bath.
Tomorrow they have a home game against Selkirk in the opening Border Semi Junior League at Peebles High School.

Peebles Piranhas

Piranhas Training
First of all our apologies to any parent who thought we were at Hay Lodge last Sunday – We will be training at the High School every weekend until the October holidays, for all age groups from 10 till 11:15. We had a good turnout for the first Sunday’s session especially in the younger age groups but would love to see more coming along at the P6 and P7 sections
The Piranhas Mini Rugby section of Peebles RFC is open to any child of primary school age, and we offer Mini Rugby including Tag, Touch and New Image Rugby, all in accordance with guidelines laid down by the S.R.U.
Training for children in Primaries one to three (Micros) is all about having fun, taking part in a team sport but with no tackling. Where a child is in P1, P2 and P3 we recommend that a parent stay for the duration of the training session.

Clothing

For training, players should wear a sports top, shorts or tracksuit bottoms, and thick socks together with rugby/football boots. In colder/wetter weather, some form of tracksuit is also advisable. Don’t forget to bring your gum shield and water bottle. We’re hoping to have samples on show this Sunday, in all sizes, of the subsidised playing kit that we have available such as track suits, rain jackets, shorts and kit bags.

Membership Form/Information pack etc
These are now available, along with a replacement fixture list, for downloading from the club web site along the order form for kit although we will have a supply for collection at our training sessions.
Coaches

We’ve already had two new volunteers come forward already but the more the merrier – it doesn’t really matter if you’ve played rugby or not- Coaching courses are available regardless of skill levels and fitness.
Autumn Test – Scotland V New Zealand

Scotland play New Zealand on Saturday 13th November and the Piranhas will be joining up with the High School to go up to Murrayfield and see hopefully a great game of rugby. At this point we are just looking for names of both players from P5, P6 and P7 and any parent who would like to come along and help as well – we’ll let you know what the prices are in a couple of weeks. If you’re interested please speak to Jim King.

Anyone wishing further details about the club, training arrangements or willing to assist in any way should contact George Blair Peebles RFC Dev. Officer

(07801 791253) or Jim King (01968 660628)
