An action packed week for the whole club. It’s been all go at Millbrae for not just one of the top clubs in the country but also one of the busiest. A week ago last Saturday the 1st XV headed down to the Greenyards to take on the mighty Hawick in the opening clash of the league programme returning home with a pleasing five point win against a decent and skilful home side. On Tuesday night the club hosted another joint training session with Glasgow Warriors which proved valuable preparation for both squads. Of particular interest to many would have been the sight of three talented seventeen year olds, Robbie Fergusson, Mark Bennett and Murray Beckwith, lining up against the Warriors back line in the team run and not looking out of place at all with Fergusson, the youngest of the trio, making an impressive clean break from stand-off right at the end. On Wednesday evening Nick Cox, among other 1st XV players, swapped the pulpit for the training ground and was down at the club helping coach the Under 18 team. Saturday afternoon saw two big results at Millbrae. The 2nd XV played their first league match of the season and their resounding victory against GHA put them straight to the top of the table, whilst the 1st XV took the points in a close, exciting and physical encounter against title contenders Melrose watched by a crowd of over 1000 people. Then to Sunday and the Mini Section Fun Day with 1st XV coaches and players out in force again to help the mini coaches run skills and games stations for all the age groups – 140 players, parents, coaches, grannies you name it they all turned out for this opening day. You’d think that was enough, wouldn’t you, well there’s more…..Sunday afternoon saw the sponsored touch festival in aid of Action for Children. Players, supporters and sponsors out in force in their hundreds to support this valuable cause on what was a fine afternoon, well weather wise anyway, even if Kenny Murray can’t run the length of himself! |
