With the first league game of the season with Huntly cancelled Deeside U15 arranged a friendly away to Grammar at Rubislaw.   Right from the KO Deeside looked to be the stronger side and with only five minutes played some quick passing along the backline allowed new recruit James Long to score with his first touch of the ball for the club.  Patrick Nicol converted comfortably despite the breeze and Deeside settled.   John Crilly was next on the score board running in two tries in quick succession.  This was followed by a fine break from Liam Hutcheon at outside centre, who weaved his way through the Grammar defence and then shifted into top gear to cross the line.  Patrick Nicol at 10 was the next to score with a clever change of attack direction from a midfield scrum twenty metres out.  The forwards played some excellent rugby securing the ball well at the ruck and setting up some powerful driving platforms and it was long before prop Elliot Wood was over for another try, demonstrating pace as well as power.  Patrick Nicol rounded off the half for Deeside with another score breaking through the defence by stepping back inside his opposite 10.  At half time Deeside turnaround with a very comfortable 47-0 lead but the strong wind had undoubtedly helped and now they had to play against it.  Grammar came out much stronger in the second half bolstered by some late arrivals and some quick recycling of ruck ball and continued working of the short side eventually broke the Deeside defence to allow Grammar in for a well deserved score in the corner.   Deeside replied through John Crilly again who swapped from center into No.8 and drove over with a pick from an attacking scrum 10 metres out, just before Alex Taylor was unlucky not be awarded a try when a long stretch to line looked good.  Prop Adam Thomson soon added another with a good drive finishing off some quick offloading play from several of the pack.  The final Deeside try came again from Crilly working the same number 8 move as before.  With a final score of 66-5 this was a very convincing win for Deeside U15’s  first game of the season and clearly some of the summer season preparations have paid off.  Nonetheless, they can expect Grammar to be very different proposition latter when they meet in the league and are at full strength.  This was nonetheless a very good team performance all round and a very promising start to the season for Deeside U15.  New players are always welcome, training is at 9.30-11.00 at Tillybrake Banchory – see the club website for more details:  www.deeside-rfc.co.uk
