Tayside 7 North East 31 In the final game of the Pathway programme, a very young Tayside team took on a physical North East side in perfect playing conditions at Perth. Early exchanges were even but eventually a missed tackle in the blind-side channel from a scrum at halfway was significant, allowing North East to score the first of the three breakaway tries they were to score in the game. The Tayside back row in particular forced errors in the North East handling, but some indiscipline in the defensive line allowed another long-range breakaway try for the North East. A quick recap behind the posts of the key national themes put Tayside back in the game and they finished the half camped on the North East try line, where committed scramble defence held out. Despite a further breakaway North East try, the second half was much more even. Some decent, structured rugby from both sides led to the try of the match where controlled phase play stretched the North East defence, allowing Tayside to punch up the middle where a classy offload led to their opening try. North East showed their character immediately, responding with a further score of their own through the hands to complete the scoring in an enjoyable and committed game. |
