The Belgian U20 squad, visiting England for a week long training camp as part of preparations for the Junior World Trophy qualifiers, proved to be a physical test for the Exiles at Bracknell RFC in August. Very well prepared and particularly good at the set piece the Belgians started quite well in the game, contesting possession well and establishing one or two decent field positions early on. Their driving maul and kicking game proved to be threatening to the Exiles too, who as usual only had had limited preparation time.
With the experience of last season’s encounter, the Exiles didn’t allow the Belgians into the game though, being accurate in the contact area (the back row performing well) and with the half backs moving the ball around quickly, helped to expose the opposition defence. Playing with width stretched the Belgian defence and allowed some incisive running from several players but notably from the Exile centres, Morrison and Mountain and later McGowan.
The forwards, led well from the front by Cherry, started to enjoy the encounter and Eadie and Casson the two locks had strong games, often appearing in wider positions supporting backs.
A win of 34-5 with a collective approach of the right quality, will prove to be a great start to the season, some very good individual performances will be of interest to Scotland selectors at U20, U19 and U18 levels. As the makeup of the squad included players from all the three age groups!
