Very breezy conditions at Kellands Park in Inverurie made even passing the ball tricky at times and certainly had an impact on Deeside’s place kickers who managed only nine conversions to add to Deeside’s sixteen tries.  Garioch composed largely of U15 players put up a very determined defence but the game was almost entirely one way traffic.  Deeside also fielded eight U15’s  but the experience of their older players gave Deeside a much more organised platform at the rucks from where quicker recycling and second phase play was able, time after time, to find and exploit gaps in Garioch’s defence.  Deeside’s tries were scored by McGowan, Long, Rennie (6), Nicol (2), Watt (3), Ballantyne, Mullins and Morris.  John McGowan scored Deeside’s opening try; a classic winger’s finish, out pacing the defence on the outside. Just like his younger brother who made his debut for the U15’s last week, new recruit Chris Long’s try came with almost his first touch of the ball from the Garioch restart, followed by a 50m solo sprint through the Garioch defence.  Captain Angus Rennie led from the front throughout turning in a double hat-trick of tries.  Playing at 10 Patrick Nicol scored twice, both with blistering breaks, and when not scoring his tactical kicking and his passing game kept the Garioch defence constantly try to guess what was coming next. George Watt also had an excellent game showing great finishing with a hat-trick of tries all from good quick ball along the back line.   The forwards also claimed two tries, the first coming from excellent support play from Chris Ballantyne playing at No8, followed shortly by one from Andrew Mullins who drove over breaking several tackles from 15m out. Angus McCance was not on the score board this time but his work rate at open side flanker both in attack and in defence was exceptional. This was a good team performance from Deeside U16 for their opening league game but just somewhat unfortunate for both teams that it turned out to be so one-sided and all credit to Garioch for their relentless defence right to the final whistle.
