Gytes Gossip PDF Print
Wednesday, 15 September 2010

A game of 2 halves at Jedburgh, saw Peebles claim the narrow victory in this Border Derby; but any win at Riverside Park is cause for celebration. First half tries by Craig Borthwick, Martin Cruickshank and Drew Moore with a conversion and 2 penalties, one of which was the only Peebles score in the second half, from Neil Warnock saw the Gytes’ men hold on to the end and claim 3rd place from Gala who lost to league leaders Edinburgh Accies.

The going only gets tougher with Hillhead/Jordanhill tomorrow followed by Edinburgh Accies next week as the pressure mounts on maintaining a top 4 place.

Tomorrow’s pitchside catering will be provided by Risotto4U who will have a variety of hot and cold foods and beverages on sale at the east end of the Gytes from 2 PM.

The seconds came unstuck at Jed when the 100 or 104 points were scored (depending on whose report you read) most of them against. There are still half a dozen players not available to the seconds due to call ups to the 1sts, injuries and non-availability, but Bev does hope for a big improvement in the next couple of weeks.

Tomorrow’s opposition at Hay Lodge Park is Melrose Knights.

Hay Lodge Park which is now in near perfect condition has already hosted as many games as were played there last season. Last week it was the venue for a slow first half, but as confidence improved and an almost perfect second half ensued and the Colts U18s won their third Border Semi Junior League game in style. It was the second game of the season where the opposition failed to score and makes it 3 league games in a row where the opposition failed to get over the try line for a touchdown. They will be hoping to build on the excellent start to the season tomorrow at Hawick PSA, who along with Peebles and Tynedale are the unbeaten sides to date.

The colts U16 play in a round robin at Kelso on Wednesday where Berwick are the 3rd side for the night.

Vets touch rugby again takes place at Hay Lodge Park from 1 PM to 2 PM tomorrow. Come along and join in then watch the 2nds at Hay Lodge Park or venture down to the Gytes for the Premier 2 game at 3 PM.

There was mixed success for the Peebles High School teams last week in the Brewin Dolphin Schools Cups. The under 18s proceeded through the preliminary round, beating Knox Academy 35 points to nil and meet George Watson’s in the first round towards the end of the month in Peebles. The U16s were not so fortunate and fell to Hawick High School in their preliminary round.

Memberships for this season are due now. Forms are available on the website or at the Eastgate Clubrooms. Subscriptions can be sent to Membership Secretary or left at the Eastgate Clubrooms with bar staff.

The Platinum Club is looking for more members. Contact Linda Murray or any committee member or leave details in the Eastgate Clubrooms, and make the draw bigger and better whilst supporting Peebles Rugby.

Members can book the refurbished clubrooms for a function by contacting Jim Currie. Note bar prices held until 4th January.

Piranhas Training
We had another good turnout at training last Sunday and it was great to see so many parents stay and watch the minis – thanks from all of us. Numbers are definitely on the increase so keep spreading the word.
Gala 19th September–

The P3’s up to P7’s will be playing at Netherdale this Sunday in a round robin tournament kicking off at 11am and our bus will be leaving from the Gytes at 09:45, returning to the same place @ 13:30, although we can’t guarantee an exact finishing time. If your child is going down on the bus but coming home by car please let one of the coaches know. Don’t forget to bring a jacket, your boots, water bottle, gum shield and a change of clothes for the return journey.

P1 + P2 training 19th September

The intention is to have a training session for the P1 and P2’s at the High School this Sunday from 10 till 11. However we may have an issue with getting the correct number of coaches on the day as the majority of our coaches will be either on duty at Gala or on an SRU course at Melrose. Final arrangements will be confirmed with the help of Radio Borders on Saturday/ Sunday plus the club web site will be updated before Sunday.

Teas, coffees etc
If anybody fancies lending a hand to raise extra funds by helping at the Sunday training sessions to sell teas, coffees etc please contact any of the coaches – last year was really successful and it would be great if we could do the same again.
Membership Form/Information pack and Fixture List
Both of these are now available for downloading from the club web site along the order form for kit although we will have a supply available at training. Subscriptions of £15 are now due – this is not only includes club membership which covers the player under our insurance cover, but gives the coaches contact details, in case of emergency, for every player, so it’s important that the form is completed as soon as you can. If you fancy joining as a family, Peebles RFC offer a discount – look on the club web site for more details.
Dates for the Diary
Coffee Morning – 25th September in the clubrooms from 10 am till 12. We will need a few volunteers from parents and P7 and P6 players plus home baking, raffle prizes etc are always appreciated. These events are the only way that funds to subsidise playing kit, match transport etc for the minis can be raised by parents and supporters so come along on the day and help us out.

Autumn Test – Scotland V New Zealand on 13th November. We’re looking for names from P7, P6 and P5 players plus any parents to go up to Murrayfield by bus. This will be a shared trip with the High School. So far we have twenty one names and will be looking to close the list by next weekend, still time though, so keep the names coming in. If you want to see Scotland take on the favourites to win next year’s World Cup then pass your names etc to Jim King.

Anyone wishing further details about the club, training arrangements or willing to assist in any way should contact George Blair Peebles RFC Dev. Officer (07801 791253) or Jim King (01968 660628)
