Edinburgh outscored Glasgow by four tries to one to run out 26-7 winners in this Under 17 National Selection Fixtures played in terrible overhead conditions, with heavy rain falling throughout the match. Despite the condition both team tried to move the ball and keep it alive in contact in an entertaining encounter, however inevitably the match degenerated into a stop start affair from time to time as handling the slippy ball became tricky. Edinburgh held the advantage in that they controlled possession and territory, camping in the Glasgow half for long periods, especially in the first half, and were more efficient in moving the ball to space, however Glasgow’s tenacious defence ensured the teams turned round all square at seven all at the break. Edinburgh captain Tommy Spinks had opened te scoring after a long period of pressure in the Glasgow 22 saw gaps appearing in the visitors defence and Spinks took advantage to stroll over for a try converted by Alistair Fraser. Glasgow responded with an opportunist try after twenty minutes when Scott Murray intercepted a pass on half way and raced home unopposed. Stephen Gillies added the extra two points. Edinburgh gained the lead early in the second half as they attacked deep into the Galsgow twenty two however when the ball was moved to wing Murray Black still had plenty to fdo, but showed good strength to brush past two tacklers to go over in the corner, with Fraser landing a great touch-line conversion. Two tries mid-way through the half sealed the match for Edinburgh first when Joe Jones was on hand close to the line to accept a pop pass and go over, and then Cameron Simpson picked a great line to ghost through the Glasgow defence from a ruck ten metres out. Andrew MacMillan added once conversion to take the score to 26-7. Glasgow had their chance late in the match to get back on the score sheet and Edinburgh had to withstand some concerted pressure on their line before the referee blew for full time. Edinburgh Team |
