I am Greg Cann, Scottish Rugby’s Regional Development Manager for Edinburgh & Midlothian & have been in post since January 2006. With 15 years experience of rugby/sport development, I have worked as a Rugby Development Officer for both Glasgow Council & the RFU, was Community Programme Manager at Sale Sharks and was a Community Development Manager for a Sport Action Zone in Liverpool. I have also held a variety of voluntary roles within a number of rugby clubs in both the Northwest of England and Scotland from player to coach. In my current role, I am responsible for the development of rugby in an area situated in the East of Scotland composing of two local authority areas, namely City of Edinburgh & Midlothian. Based at Murrayfield stadium, I am responsible for all aspects of rugby development across Edinburgh & Midlothian & lead the Regional Development Team for the area which comprises ten Rugby/Club Development Officers (R/CDO’s), in partnership with Local Authorities and Clubs throughout the region. There are also ten SVQ Community Coaches and a number of sessional activators working for local clubs and along-side these staff to assist with development. Support is given to the 29 Secondary schools (CoE x23, ML x6), 130 Primary schools (CoE x94, ML x36), 6 Independent schools (all CoE), 3 Universities (all CoE), 3 FE colleges (CoE x2, ML x1) and 23 rugby clubs (CoE x20, ML x3) ranging in levels from Premier One to regional league & non-Saturday teams. End-of-season registration figures (2009-10) showed a total of 3035 adult players & 4253 young (u18) players within the region. I am responsible for delivering the three year Regional Rugby Development Strategy and annual action plans which includes managing x2 regional development groups for the City & Midlothian respectively. These groups were established in January 2006 & are made up of representatives from all the clubs, referees, Local Authorities and other interested parties including Sportscotland. Meeting quarterly their purpose is to be the driving force for rugby in the region.
