Captial city sides Boroughmuir and Currie were crowned champions of the National Youth League Under-18 and Under-16 Youth League Bowl competitiosn at Murrayfield today following wins over Kilmarnock and Aberdeen Grammar respectively.

In the under-16 competition Currie and Grammar battled it out from start to finish, raining in tries at either end.

Ultimately Currie’s accuracy led to their victory as they racked up an impressive total of six tries (centre Euan Smith picking up a hat-trick, wing Nick Pert getting a brace of tries and four conversions and fellow wing Euan Carruthers also getting in on the act with a single score) to Aberdeen’s three.

Grammar’s scores came from full-back McLeod Stephan, open-side flanker Blair Munro and number 8 Christopher McIlroy.

Scrum-half James Palmer slotted a single penalty before centre Maxwell Harris took over kicking duties to convert twice.

The under-18 final saw an intriguing contest between an aggressive and tenacious Kilmarnock side and a quick and skilful Boroughmuir side.

Kilmarnock dominated the early stages of the match up front and so earned territory and plenty possession however it became evident that, with ball, Boroughmuir could and would be dangerous.

This they proved as ran in three tries to Kilmarnock’s one in the first half – wing Michael Smith, hooker Darren Miller and man of the match winning stand-off Alistair Fraser all running in tries with Kilmarnock lock Peter Redmayne getting Kilmarnock’s try.

With a 19-7 lead at the interval it was always going to be tough for Killy and while an unconverted try from number 8 Blair Jardine raised spirits and hopes, a Fraser penalty edged Boroughmuir out of reach where they remained until the final whistle.
