Some 13 teams from across Scotland are now ready to compete in the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools national Bowl competitions at under-18 and under-16 levels, with the other three teams still to be confirmed. Six new teams join the race for the under-18 silverware while Bearsden/Douglas Academy, the 2010/11 Bowl runners-up, and the Elgin Schools are the two teams remaining to have made the national knock-outs last year. Culloden Academy wait to see who they will take on in Queen Victoria School or Balfron High School, the last under-18 regional final.
The under-16 national quarter-finals has a fresh look altogether with all six teams so far changed from last season. Biggar High School do have national experience though having reached the semi-finals two years ago. They also wait to see if they will play Balfron High School or Larbert High School. Furthermore, Hawick High School’s opponents are yet to be confirmed. They will either play Castle Douglas High School or Shawlands Academy/Kings Park Secondary School. The draw for the two age groups is as follows. The teams have until Saturday 18 February to fulfil these fixtures: Under-18 BOWL – Quarter Finals Central TBC v Culloden Academy Queen Anne High School v Elgin Schools Dunbar Grammar School v St. Josephs College Boroughmuir/James Gillespie’s v Bearsden/ Douglas Academy A spokesperson for St. Josephs College said: “This is the first time our team has got this far in the competition. It’s a fair reflection of the effort and dedication that our captain George Tweedie and the players have put in. “The boys have really enjoyed the tournament as it has been very competitive and for that reason they have put in a lot of hard work.” Pete Kelly, head coach for the Elgin Schools said: “The lads are really enjoying the competition, with every game we’ve played being close. “The players organise themselves on and off the pitch, they organise buses, kit and everything else for match-day. Most of them play for local clubs and use that experience to help the non-club players. “It’s been difficult to fulfil fixtures at the moment because of prelims, holidays and weather but the teachers are all very co-operative, letting the boys play. “We just want to keep winning and go further in the national competition now.” Under-16 BOWL – Quarter Finals Plockton High School v Madras College Trinity Academy v Westhill Academy Biggar High School v Central TBC Glasgow South TBC v Hawick High School Ewan Smeaton, head coach for Westhill Academy said: “I’m delighted at how well we have done this year; it’s the first time we have won the regional bowl. “We have definitely felt the benefits of the new format of the competition because it has enabled us to get games without having to travel too far. “We now travel to Edinburgh from near Aberdeen to take on Trinity Academy and we know playing one of the capital schools will be a hard test, but we have had good results up here so the boys will go with a positive attitude and are keen to get stuck in.” |
