FOOTBALL DOMINATED TYNECASLTE EMBRACE RUGBY PDF Print
Thursday, 24 June 2010
As little as two years ago in Tynecastle High School, there wasn’t the slightest hint of rugby, with the school’s closest connection to the sport being the nearby home of Scottish Rugby, Murrayfield.

This year, however, has brought new opportunities to pupils who wouldn’t have even considered the oval ball before.

The employment of club development officer Stuart Dennis – by Murrayfield Wanderers for the surrounding area – has supplied the first step in bringing the game into unchartered territory.

Stuart, along with the support of PE Teacher Bruce Aitchison and Scottish Widow’s Bank rugby champion James Dickie, has worked to develop the sport across the area which feeds Tynecastle High School as well as St Thomas Aquins High School,

Stuart Dennis said: “Everyone loves the physical contact and all the age groups train together which creates a great atmosphere in the school. The camaraderie is amazing.”

Tynecastle High School now supplies 20 young players both male and female to the nearby Murrayfield Wanderers; each of who were involved with the Edinburgh School’s Sevens Series. Furthermore the school has recently hosted their first ever tag rugby tournament, attracting 200 first and second year boys and girls, while senior pupils got involved by refereeing the tournament.

Tynecastle’s involvement in the Edinburgh School Sevens Series was also unprecedented. They finished ninth in the series, out of 25, an incredible achievement for a school that almost solely followed football until two years ago.
