RBS Shield: Marr 30-15 Livingston

Marr win RBS ShieldMarr Rugby Club continued their unbeaten run this season by winning the RBS National Shield trophy at Murrayfield this afternoon (20 April).

The west-coasters put three tries, three conversions and three penalties passed their opponents Livingston and won 30-15.

However, despite Marr taking an early lead, Livingston bounced back and closed the gap, and only lay four points behind with an hour on the clock. However, this only spurred Marr on more and they re-took command of the game and secured the win.

Marr made a quick impression on the second game of the day, with two early tries from winger Scott Bickerstaff (three minutes) and flanker, Fraser Grant (six minutes). These were converted by stand-off Rory McGee. 0-14

Livingston then managed to muscle their way onto the board with a kick at goal. Stand-off Craig Bolan, kicked the penalty. 3-14

However, less than a minute later and 15 minutes into the match Marr were on the board again, this time it was McGee who broke away and touched down. 3-19

For the remainder of the half, Livingston upped their game and had a prolonged attack at the west coasters line, however, Marr’s defence was impenetrable and they stopped their opponents breaking through on countless occasions.

With two minutes left on the clock in the first period, Marr suffered a blow, losing number 8 Fraser Grant to the sin bin.

In the second-half, Livingston were commanding the territory and possession and within four minutes were on the board, for their first try. Stand-off Bolan touched down under the posts and converted the try. 10-19

As the clock ticked past the one hour mark, both teams had exchanged possession on numerous occasions and had their chances to attack each other’s line, but no scores were conceded.

Not long after, Livingston were back on the board with a try from winger Jamie King, bringing the east-coasters within four points of Marr. 15-19

With 15 minutes left in the match, Marr had the chance to push just out of reach of a Livingston try and conversion but McGee’s kick went awry.

Moments later Livingston’s replacement prop Geoff Caldwell was sent to the bin and Marr were in for their third try of the match. This time it was hooker and captain Stephen Adair who touched down. 15-24

Marr furthered their lead with six minutes to go with another penalty from McGee. He then concluded the match with one last strike at goal. 15-30
