Murrayfield Wanderers have claimed the Sarah Beaney Cup for the third year in a row defeating Hillhead/Jordanhill 30-10.

After being dominated by Hillhead’s forwards for much of the first half, Wanderers adjusted their style and sent the ball out wide where their strength and pace couldn’t be halted with Chloe Rollie and Rhona Lloyd scoring twice.

However, it was Hillhead who were first on the score sheet in what was set to be a grudge match between the east and west rivals.

Centre Megan Gaffney crossed the whitewash out wide after sustained pressure but with the conversion missed the score sat at 0-5.

The pressure continued when captain and number 8 Jade Konkel and hooker Lana Skeldon powered up the paddock to give their side the yards before the ball was turned over.

Wanderers’ all Scotland Women backline then showed their skill following a break by full-back Rollie who weaved through the defence before sending the ball out to wide towards centre Helen Nelson, who crossed the whitewash to even the score (5-5).

Within minutes, the rapid Rollie sped down the wing from half-way and beat several defenders to cross the whitewash and push last year’s winners ahead 10-5.

HALF-TIME: Murrayfield Wanderers 10-5 Hillhead/Jordanhill

Wanderers came out firing on the attack and it didn’t take long for Rollie to sprint over the line for the second time following a sharp break and offload from captain Lisa Martin to Elidh Sinclair.

Martin confidently added the extras taking the score to 17-5 with just over 30 minutes left on the clock.

HIllhead’s Gaffney hit the gas again and it looked like her colleague Heather Lockhart had steamed over the line only for the referee to deem it was held up. But that didn’t halt Hillhead and Jemma Forsyth nipped through the defence to score (17-10).

Martin answered back with a brilliant chip kick which was collected by Rhona Lloyd and touched down to edge Wanderers further into the lead 22-10 with a quarter left to play.

Hillhead captain Konkel then saw yellow for a dangerous tackle which opened up the field for Lloyd to scream over the line again and with Martin successful converting, the game and silverware was Murrayfield Wanderers once again.

Martin said: “It’s huge for us, we spoke about it in the changing rooms before we came out that Beaney gave absolutely everything for this jersey and her last game was the Cup final … and we should do her justice and give as much as she did and do her proud today.

“Hillhead were outstanding, their forwards really took it to us in that first half. They absolutely dominated. We just needed to up our physically which I think we did after half-time.

“We played to our strengths, we used our back-line as we knew we had strength out on the wing and 15. Once we did that we were gaining yards.”
