Scotland 7s' hopes of a first ever Cup final on the HSBC Sevens World Series circuit were ended this afternoon, in a 7-10 defeat to Canada, who have now achieved that feet for the first time.

Scotland 7s fans do however have one more opportunity at this weekend's Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s, to cheer on their country.  Scotland play Fiji in the third place play-off at 6.16pm and the gates have been opened for fans to attend for free from 5.30pm.

Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: "We have missed an opportunity here, it's as simple as that.

"Canada were very physical at the breakdown and they made life difficult for us.  Fair play to them they played very well.

We now move into the third place play-off and will look to finish today on a high.  It's great that we have opened the gates for fans to come for free this evening, so we'll hopefully have a big support as we move into our last game v Fiji."

The Scots were resilient at times, but were out done by a side who dominated possession and the breakdown throughout the tie.  At half-time things were all-square with the scoreboard remaining 0-0 after a last ditch tackle from James Eddie to stop Canada from scoring.

In the second period though, Canada moved in front, through playmaker, Phil Mack, who scored a try, conversion and penalty to put them 10-0 ahead.

Scotland's only points in the game came late, with Scott Riddell touched down as the final whistle blew.  Captain, Colin Gregor converted the try.
