Watsonians defeated their Stirling County opposition in a hotly contested match, to lift the BT Women’s Plate with a 25-22 victory.

The Edinburgh based side, Watsonians, went into the interval with a comfortable 20-5 lead, scoring four tries to Stirling’s one, yet a phenomenal comeback from the latter made for an enthralling climax to the game.

BT Women’s Premier League side, Stirling, who sit a league above Watsonians, mounted an inspiring retaliation in the final quarter of the game, yet weren’t able to clinch a match-winning score, despite their tenacity and evident hunger.

Watsonian’s coach, Tristan Gray, said: “It’s amazing; I’ve been here a few times with different squads and clubs, but the atmosphere today was absolutely fantastic and we’re delighted to have lifted the Plate.

“The level of rugby played was of a really high standard. Stirling County came here and gave it their all, and all credit to them, but the last few weeks of hard work from our group has really paid off.”

Watsonians opened the scoring after only a minute when Isla Miller crossed the whitewash to give her side a 5-0 lead.

County replied after 10 minutes through wing Jess McGurk, who sprinted in from 60 metres for a fantastic individual score.

However, this was to be the Caledonia side’s only points of the half, with Watsonians scoring a further three tries before the interval through scrum-half Sarah Nimmo, stand-off Emma Evans and Miller, who grabbed her second of the game.

Half-time: Watsonians 20 – 5 Stirling County

The second period proved a very intense affair, with Stirling County really uping the tempo of their game and mounting a fantastic comeback.

County’s McGurk matched her Watsonians counterpart, Miller, and dotted down for a try-brace early in the half, but this was nulled only minutes later when the Edinburgh club’s lock Kim Smyth grabbed a try of her own.

As the game entered the final quarter, Stirling County upped the intensity, and their persistence and patience in attack paid off when McGurk completed her hat-trick to take her side to within 10 points (25-15).

Buoyed by the performance of their clinical wing, County’s Rachel Shankland crossed the whitewash with four minutes left on the clock. Heather Davis’ successful conversion, the first of the game, made it a three-point match and built for a tremendous climax (25-22).

Thriving on confidence, County went back on the attack from the restart, but Watsonians’ wiry wing Charlotte Runcie pulled off a match-winning turnover to secure the ball, and, indeed, the game and the silverware.
