Glasgow University were crowned winners of the BT Women’s Bowl final after securing a comfortable victory against Howe Harlequins at BT Murrayfield today (15-0).

Confidence was a key factor for Glasgow University as they entered the final after winning all ten matches in the Scottish 1A BUCS league.

Their lively pace and dynamism was too much for Howe Harlequins as Glasgow proved to be a dangerous opponent from the offset and after six minutes’ of play, lock Hannah Hotchin crashed through Howe’s defence from close range to bring the first points on the scoreboard to the university side (5-0).

Glasgow demonstrated their attacking intent throughout the first half, exploiting the wide channels to move closer to the try line and were soon able to extend their early lead when Phaedra Snailham dived over the whitewash (10-0).

Howe were presented the opportunity to pile on the pressure for the first time in the game when Glasgow University were down to 14 women as number 7, Eilidh Collins, was sin binned.

After a series of impressive phases, Howe took advantage of the situation and soon found themselves metres short of the try line. The women from Fife, however, were unable to capitalise as mistakes proved costly with Glasgow defending well against their attack.

Concluding stages of the first half were spent within Glasgow’s 22m line yet the university’s solid defence was impenetrable and Glasgow soon had the upper hand again when Phendra Snailham illustrated her speedy agility after a 50m sprint to score her second try of the game.

HALF-TIME: Glasgow University 15–0 Howe Harlequins

As the game progressed into the second half, Glasgow maintained the pressure but a series of mistakes by both sides slowed down the pace of the game.

Injury also plagued Howe Harlequins with several players leaving the field as their substitutes had to step up to the challenge.

Howe showed their defiance in the closing stages of the game and had Glasgow pinned in their own half. There were glimpses of opportunities close to the try line but once again, Howe were unable to reap the rewards.

Glasgow University Head Coach, Ashley Cathcart, expressed his delight with the result: “We have played very well within our university league this year.

“We’ve been struggling at the bottom of National 1 League this year so it’s good that we’ve managed to come out today with some silverware at the end of the season.

“Howe are a very new team, but they piled on a lot of pressure near the end.”
