Scotland 7s were unable to finish their pool with a win on Saturday 29 June at the Rugby World Cup 7s in Moscow, losing out to group winners South Africa, 41-0.

Things didn’t go well from the start with the Scots opponents scoring quickly in the first period. The opening try was followed by six more on their side of the break.

This now leaves Scotland 7s with the opportunity to match their 2009 campaign where they won the Plate. They will play Zimbabwe at 9.04am (BST).

Scotland 7s head coach, Stephen Gemmel said: “We’re massively disappointed at the manor of tonight’s defeat. We put ourselves into the exact position we wanted to be in at the beginning of the South Africa game. We then lost an earlier try and capitulated.

“The challenge for everyone now is to get back up for tomorrow’s Plate quarter-final against Portugal. We’re the defending champions of this trophy, therefore we need to go out and show what that means to us.”

Subs: Chris Dean, Jim Thompson (both 7mins), Struan Dewar (10mins), Michael Maltman and James Johnstone (both 11mins)
