Scotland under-20 were unable to match their historic victory over Australia in round one of the World Rugby Under-20 Championship, as the went down, 44-0, to hosts England in the second round of the competition at Manchester City Academy Stadium.

The opening 40 minute proved a tight affair, with England taking advantage of Scotland errors to gain a slight upper-hand and a 13-0 lead at the interval, through a try from captain Jack Walker, and eight points from the pinpoint boot of influential stand-off Harry Mallinder.

A turgid opening 15 minutes ensued in the second-half, as conditions began to take their toll, yet two tries in quick succession just after the 50 minute mark swung momentum England’s way, and provided the platform to close out the game with a further three tries prior to the full-time whistle sounding.

Head Coach John Dalziel said: “There were points in the game where I felt we were going really well. However, when you look at the story of the match, it was error after error, which proved costly.

“They were forcing us back at the scrums and putting us under pressure, whicb led to penalties and ultimately points.

“We had a lot of possession, but a high number of errors, which we know we  can’t afford to commit against a team like England.

“We can’t afford to have every player play in every game this Championship. Some guys had their first taste and experience of the tournament tonight, which will help their development, and we’ve got some boys who’ll come back into the team for Wednesday’s game against Italy.”

Scotland’s Blair Kinghorn had two early shots at goal, yet, despite having the distance from long-range, was unable to hit the target from the tee from difficult positions on the park.

His opposite number, Mallinder, made no mistake with his first at goal, slotting a penalty from in-front of the uprights to take his side 3-0 ahead after ten minutes, and followed this up with a further three points seven minutes later following a 13th minute miss (0-6).

Buoyed by the boot of Mallinder, England crossed the line for the first score of the game at the close of the opening quarter, with captain Walker touching down from a driving lineout maul. Mallinder’s conversion extended his side’s lead.

Half-time: Scotland under-20 0 – 13 England under-20

Dalziel freshened up his pack at the break, with prop Murray McCallum, lock Andrew Davidson and back-row Matt Smith all entering the fray in place of Dan Elkington, Callum Hunter-Hill and Scott Burnside respectively.

The first-half followed a similar pattern to the first, with the greasy conditions taking their toll on both side’s ability to play the ball through the hands.

England flanker Will Evans scampered in at the corner on 54 minutes, and, only after a lengthy look from the TMO, was he awarded the try with Mallinder’s conversion taking the score to 20-0 in favour of the hosts.

Straight from the kick-off, the men in white struck again, breaking from their own half before centre John Williams touched down for his side’s third, less than two minutes after Evans’ score. Mallinder, again, converted (0-27).

Scotland’s best chance of the game came in the 60th minute when replacements scrum-half Charlie Shiel and centre Matt McPhillips combined. McPhillips hit a tight line off the ruck and travelled over the line, yet was unable to hold onto the greasy ball as he powered through the contact on approach of the whitewash.

England rallied as the game drew to a close, with substitutes Jack Singleton and Max Malins crossing the line in the final five minutes, both tries which were converted by the latter, who also slotted a late penalty.
