Gavin Scott'S Rare Start For Glasgow

Gavin Scott will start for Glasgow on Saturday for only the second time in a league or cup match this season. Glasgow need him in the XV for the Welsh/Scottish League game against Pontypridd at Sardis Road because Gordon Bulloch is being rested at the request of Scotland's coach, Ian McGeechan.Scott's only previous start also was in a league game in Wales - at Bridgend in August. Since then he has been on the substitutes" bench as back-up hooker for 15 successive matches.Douglas Hall, who is back-up hooker for the Pontypridd match, has yet to play for Glasgow this season. A broken ankle kept him out of rugby until last month, though he made his first appearance in the professional ranks by playing in the first half for the Glasgow/Edinburgh Development XV against the Scotland Under-21 team at Murrayfield last month. His rehabilitation continued as a second-half substitute for the Scottish Students in their game against their English counterparts at Inverleith last week.Jason White, like Bulloch, also is being rested the week before Scotland's international against Italy in Rome. His absence from the Glasgow team allows Nathan Ross to return at lock.In all, six changes have been made in the team who last took the field for Glasgow, when they lost the league match against Cardiff three weeks ago. James McLaren, Tommy Hayes, and Andy Nicol, all indisposed at the time of the Cardiff match, return to the back division, and Gareth Flockhart resumes as open-side flanker in place of McLaren's young brother, Tom. Hayes and Nicol are at half-back in place of Graeme Kiddie and Graeme Beveridge whereas James McLaren replaces Alan Bulloch at outside centre.Barry Irving is unavailable even to be among the substitutes for Saturday as he damaged a knee in training earlier this week. The injury is the latest misfortune to befall him this year - he would have deputised for Hayes at stand-off in Cardiff three weeks ago if he had not taken ill the day before the match.Kick-off at Sardis Road on Saturday will be at 2.30pm.
