Townsend’s last start for the Reivers was in the rousing performance in the South of France against French champions, Biarritz, in the Heineken Cup.
Looking ahead to taking on the Blues, who are unbeaten at home this season, head coach Steve Bates said: “December was a month of positive performances, especially away to Biarritz and at home to Glasgow, despite the final results.
”It’s going to be a huge challenge for us playing away to Cardiff, who are unbeaten at home, but we are in confident mood and are looking forward to yet another challenging game in the Magners League.”
Also travelling with the squad to Cardiff are National Academy (Borders) winger Mark Robertson and flanker Roddy Grant.
