Townsend’s last start for the Reivers was in the rousing performance in the South of France against French champions, Biarritz, in the Heineken Cup.

Looking ahead to taking on the Blues, who are unbeaten at home this season, head coach Steve Bates said: “December was a month of positive performances, especially away to Biarritz and at home to Glasgow, despite the final results.

”It’s going to be a huge challenge for us playing away to Cardiff, who are unbeaten at home, but we are in confident mood and are looking forward to yet another challenging game in the Magners League.”

Also travelling with the squad to Cardiff are National Academy (Borders) winger Mark Robertson and flanker Roddy Grant.

NATIONAL ACADEMY (BORDERS)

Three Senior National Academy (Borders) players could find themselves in Magners League action this weekend as the Border Reivers visit the Cardiff Blues. Back-rower Scott Newlands is listed in Steve Bates’ squad for the Saturday tea-time match, which is live on S4C, whilst winger Mark Robertson and flanker Roddy Grant join the travelling squad.

In the launch of the Scottish Hydro Electric Super Cup, Hawick may give another senior outing to young prop Nicky Little in their home match with Ayr after a couple of good showings in the festive fixtures.

Joining Nicky in the Greens squad are Senior National Academy (Borders) players Graham Hogg and Junior National Academy (Borders) player Rory Hutton.

Melrose, who travel to league champions Currie, include winger Callum Anderson. In the Currie line-up is Borders pro player Dougie Flockhart, while pro scrum-half Calum Cusiter will feature for his club of origin, Boroughmuir, as they travel to take on Glasgow Hawks.

In Premier Two, centre Lee Kibble is included in the Gala team for their crunch match with Kelso at Netherdale, while no.8 Richie Vernon has recovered from an elbow injury and joins his Stewart’s-Melville FP team-mates who await the visit of GHA to Inverleith.

Following qualification for the National Youth League Cup, Hawick Wanderers, with prop Gavin Cameron in their line-up, travel to Whitecraigs for their quarter-final tie.

In friendly action is centre Michael Tait as Kelso Harlequins cross the border to take on Alnwick Colts.
