Glasgow Warriors and Scotland A winger Thom Evans will join the Scotland 7s squad for the next IRB Sevens World Series event in Wellington, New Zealand on 2-3 February.
Commenting on today’s news, Evans said: “I can’t wait to get involved in the international sevens circuit which features some of the fittest and most exciting players in the world.
“As a winger, I’m looking forward to having some more space around me, given the freedom to run that sevens can offer.
In line with Scottish Rugby’s integrated National Academy structure, the nucleus of this season’s squad is made up of National Academy players, with fulltime professional players, like Evans, supplementing the core squad.
Scotland 7s head coach Stephen Gemmell added: “Thom’s inclusion in the sevens squad is a positive sign of how the national team and pro-team management teams can work together to release a player of his calibre.”
The Scotland 7s team will face England, Samoa and Papua New Guinea in the pool stages of the Wellington tournament before they fly to San Diego, USA where they have been drawn against Fiji, Argentina and the West Indies.
Reacting to the draw, Gemmell said: “We have two more tough tournaments ahead of us.
“Both draws pose a range of different challenges, but we made good progress in Dubai and George and we will be looking to take forward the positives from both tournaments.”
