Scotland captain Chris Paterson today wished the Scotland 7s squad well for this weekends IRB Sevens World Series event in Wellington, New Zealand, which kicks-off on Saturday.
In their first outing in this year’s tournament, the Scotland 7s team will complete a trio of games against England as the Scotland U20 team and the senior Scotland side are all in actions against the Auld Enemy this weekend.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Saturday’s RBS 6 Nations clash against England where Scotland will defend their Calcutta Cup title, Paterson said: “I was saying to the players on Monday that this weekend is a big start to the international set-up for the whole year.
“On Saturday we have the Calcutta Cup game whilst the 7s team are competing in the Wellington Sevens so we all want to wish them the best of luck.
“All of this is geared up towards Scotland performing in the World Cup and I think it is a massive year for Scottish rugby and we want to make it as big a year as possible for the fans.
“We want to be successful and we want to carry on the wee bit of success we had last year and it’s not just focussing on the national team. It’s the A team when they play, it’s the club team, the Women and the U20s and especially this weekend it’s the sevens as well.
“So we are all looking for a big season this year culminating at the end with the World Cup."
Captaining the Scotland 7s team is Border Reivers and Hawick no. 8 Scott Forrest whose team has been bolstered by the added experience of Scotland A winger Thom Evans, Border Reivers scrum-half Calum Cusiter and Glasgow Warriors winger Colin Shaw.
