Scottish Rugby and EventScotland are working in partnership to ensure the successful delivery of international sevens in Scotland for the next five years.
EventScotland is supporting the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s 2007 in recognition of its potential economic impact on Scotland's economy, the opportunity the event presents to showcase Scotland to a worldwide TV audience and to help Scottish Rugby grow the game in Scotland.
EventScotland will be working closely with the event hosts Scottish Rugby and other key partners including the City of Edinburgh Council, VisitScotland and Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh & Lothian.
The IRB Sevens World Series has been secured for Scotland until 2011 and Scottish Rugby is currently considering with relevant partners where else in Scotland, outside of the capital, it may take the event.
Commenting on today’s funding announcement, Gordon McKie, Chief Executive of Scottish Rugby said:
"We welcome EventScotland's significant financial support for the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s 2007 tournament here at Murrayfield and look forward to continuing our partnership in the coming years, as we seek to deliver successful rugby events in Scotland.
“International sevens rugby is something very special and really exciting and our plans for the final leg of the sevens circuit in Edinburgh reflect that.
“Together with EventScotland and other partners we will be hosting a memorable and entertaining two-day event, not only for rugby fans and families but also for a whole new set of visitors to Scotland who are attracted to the party atmosphere only sevens can offer."
Paul Bush, Deputy Chief Executive at EventScotland said:
“Rugby plays a huge role in the delivery of Scotland’s Major Events Strategy and that is why EventScotland is working closely with Scottish Rugby to help deliver successful rugby events in Scotland. The IRB Sevens Series is world renowned and I am delighted Scotland is able to showcase the climax to the whole series.
“This year the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s sets the scene for more international rugby, when Murrayfield stages two of Scotland's Rugby World Cup pool matches against the All Blacks and Romania in September. This also builds on our ongoing relationship with the IRB, which has already seen Scotland stage the IRB Awards dinner in 2006 and the IRB Under 21 World Championship in 2004. "
The IRB has run a series of international sevens events since 1999, with teams competing for trophies in each of eight tournaments, such as Hong Kong and Dubai. In Edinburgh in just three months time, an overall title winner as World Sevens Champions will also be celebrated.
