Scotland 7s opened their Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s account with a win over Russia at Murrayfield this morning.

Speaking after the game, Scotland 7s coach Stephen Gemmell said: "That was a huge opportunity for Russia to topple the host nation, so we did well to keep our composure and keep our shape.

The pressure has been building all week, with 16 strong teams in the tournament, there are no easy games. "For 70% of the game, we stuck to our task. All eyes are now on our next game against Canada."

Scotland's Simon Cross secured the ball well from the kick-off and built up a calm and effective counter-attack as play moved from side to side.

Colin Shaw was let loose up the right wing and beat his opposite man for pace to cross in the corner for Scotland's opening try.

Russia pulled one back as Vladimir Ostroushko's footwork fooled Mike Adamson ensuring the Russian crossed under the posts for a well worked and well deserved score.

Scott Forrest almost brought the Scots back in front moments later after Ben Cairns' hard work out wide opened up some space for the captain to burst through. However, play was brought back as the final pass was deemed forward.

Forrest finally got his break as he was unleashed under the posts. Mike Adamson converted to give Scotland a seven point lead going into the last minute of the first half.

Exactly one minute into the second half, Scotland were further in front when Shaw executed a neat chip-and-chase.

As Colin Gregor ran alongside in support, he was brought to the deck, but Shaw had enough pace to get to the ball first and dive over for the five points. Adamson converted.
