The Catalan giants, who have been contracted by sports management and conference business PLATINUM ONE to hold a pre-season training camp in Scotland, will bring their full first team and be based in the Fife town of St Andrews.
During their five day stay Frank Rijkaard’s team will play Dundee United at Tannadice Park (Thursday 26 July, 8pm) before the trip to Edinburgh to face Hearts at the home of Scottish Rugby, Murrayfield Stadium (Saturday 28 July, 4pm).
Fintan Drury, PLATINUM ONE chairman said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the uptake of tickets. After the initial excitement about FC Barcelona’s trip to Scotland we might have imagined ticket sales taking a dip before the final run-in to the game in July. That has not happened.
“Sports fans in Scotland and far beyond are rightly excited by the prospect of players like Ronaldinho, Eto, Gudjonsson, and company coming to play in Scotland.”
Hearts commercial director Ali Russell commented: “20,000 tickets is a real landmark figure to have sold in June, several weeks before the game. Hearts supporters are hugely excited by the prospect of playing against one of the world’s super-star filled teams.
“For everyone at Hearts our season gets underway on 28 July!”
Supporters are encouraged to book tickets without delay in order to enjoy the best views available at Murrayfield Stadium. Demand is set to increase even more in the weeks leading up to the game
Scottish Rugby chief executive Gordon McKie added: “Breaking through the 20,000 tickets sold mark is most encouraging and I’m sure both football teams will enjoy the great facilities we have to offer here at Murrayfield.
“This is a busy summer for Scottish Rugby as we will be welcoming the Hearts and Barcelona fans to Murrayfield next month right in the build up to the Bank of Scotland Corporate August Tests and of course the two Rugby World Cup games to be played here in September. So there's a lot happening and we're really looking forward to hosting this football fixture.
“Welcoming a team of such calibre as Barcelona to Murrayfield is beneficial not only for ourselves and Hearts but also for the capital itself and sport in Scotland in general."
Hearts’ record European crowd is 37,000, generated when the Edinburgh team faced Standard Liege in 1958. The club’s best ever crowd at Murrayfield was against AEK Athens last season when 32,459 supporters attended the Champions League qualifier against the Greek side. Both figures are expected to be beaten given the current pattern of sales.
