Sports management business PLATINUM ONE today announced that 30,000 tickets have now been sold for the glamour pre-season friendly between FC Barcelona and Heart of Midlothian FC, which takes place at Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday 28 July (kick-off 4pm).
Despite being the closed season for supporters of both rugby and football, sales have remained extremely strong, especially following the high profile transfer of Thierry Henry from Arsenal to the Catalan giants.
The biggest ever football crowd recorded at the home of Scottish Rugby came on Wednesday 9 August 2006 when 32,459 attended the UEFA Champions League qualifier between Hearts and AEK Athens. That record is on course to be broken shortly.
Hearts’ biggest ever crowd against European opposition came when 37,000 supporters raised the roof at Tynecastle when Belgian side, Standard Liege, visited Scotland in 1958. This record is also on course to be broken.
Scott Hastings from PLATINUM ONE said: “I’m delighted that with just over three weeks until the match, we have already sold this number of tickets. FC Barcelona playing at Murrayfield is going to be an awesome sight.
“It is really important that anyone attending the game between Barcelona and Hearts books tickets now because we are stressing that there will be no ticket sales on the day of the game.
“Demand for this fixture is exceeding our expectations with sports fans in Scotland eager to see some of the world’s finest footballers feature in Edinburgh at Murrayfield Stadium.”
Hearts sport director and interim head coach, Anatoly Korobochka, confirmed he was delighted with ticket sales: “I would hope that Hearts and Barcelona fans would fill out Murrayfield because it is a very big occasion for Hearts. It is a very big football occasion for Edinburgh.
“For the players to walk out on that pitch to play against one of the top clubs in the world is special. I would like this game to be used by our players as motivation to gear them up for the forthcoming season.”
PLATINUM ONE has contracted Barcelona for a week of its pre-season, during which time they will be based in St Andrews.
Aside from the clash at Murrayfield, they will play Dundee United on Thursday 26 July at Tannadice (kick-off 8pm). United are unbeaten in four previous games against their illustrious opponents. This match sold out in one week.
