Bortolami Out As Troncon Leads Italian Charge

Italy’s captain Marco Bortolami will miss Saturday’s crunch match against Scotland after failing to recover from a neck and thigh injury.

The Gloucester lock was due to have further medical tests in Marseille this morning to determine his fitness after sitting out this week’s training. But it seems the captain will not be ready for the final pool C match as head coach Pierre Berbizier has left him out of the team which was named earlier. Scrum half Alessandro Troncon will instead lead the Italians on Saturday.

Berbizier is determined that his captain’s absence will not affect the game. He said: "We don't have Bortolami, but the match was prepared with the players I had at my disposal. Therefore, it shouldn't be a huge impact. His absence won't change our tactical gameplan.

"Honestly, we didn't show anything so far in the tournament, even with Bortolami on the field. Now is the time to find the answers at a team level and not an individual level."

The coach has named Ramiro Pez at stand off as Roland de Marigny moves to the bench.

"I took this decision because Pez is the one who played the most with Alessandro Troncon, Mirco Bergamasco and Gonzalo Canale. It's a tactical decision to give the team more uniformity."

Scotland coach Frank Hadden will name his team at 3pm this afternoon.
