De Luca: I Want Centre Spot

ImageNick De Luca admits he is just keeping Edinburgh's number 15 shirt warm ahead of the planned return of Scotland internationalist Hugo Southwell and revealed he is aiming to make his mark in midfield this season. The Scotland A internationalist has started the opening four matches of the Magners League campaign at full-back and scored his opening try against Newport Gwent Dragons last Friday. But the 23-year-old claims that, although he has enjoyed his stay in the back-three, he views his positional future in the black and red in the centres.

De Luca said: "I"m in more of a caretaker role at 15 at the moment until Hugo gets back. I would like to play centre, but I"ll play wherever the team needs because I"m just happy to be on the pitch. Now the big shots are back as such we will have to see what happens.

"At full-back, you need a bit more of a level head. You are the last line of defence and you are the safety man at the back for the kicks.

"At centre, you know you are safe to have a go because people are going to be with you. But as a 15 you always have to do what is best for the team which is sometimes difficult when you have to stop your instincts.

"Andy (Andrew Turnbull) and Maxy (Andrew Maxwell) are both good players and I"ve enjoyed playing with them both in the back three."

The Dumfries-born back with the Italian surname revealed he is also keen to earn himself a recall into Scotland's squad for the Six Nations tournament, even though he narrowly missed out on place at the World Cup.

He said: "Before the World Cup all kicked off, the Churchill Cup was a bonus for me. I thoroughly enjoyed that.

'so to get named in the World Cup squad was a surprise and I was delighted to get involved. The training was good. It was good to be training with all these class players " they are the best in Scotland.

"When your season is over it picks you up because you"ve got another thing to aim for.

"It lets you know that you are not that far away and motivates to keep plugging away. I will hopefully get involved again at some point this season. If not then I"ve got plenty to do here.

"But my first priority is with performing well for my club and anything else is an added bonus."
