Smith: Glad To Be Back

ImageCraig Smith admits he is not aiming to become Scotland's answer to Sebastian Chabal " a bearded impact player " and revealed he is thrilled to be back in training again with Edinburgh. The 29-year-old prop came off the bench in Scotland's World Cup quarter final showdown with Argentina and, after carrying the ball deep into Pumas" territory, sparked a late flurry which almost resulted in a dramatic win for Frank Hadden's side. But even though Scotland ended up being narrowly defeated, Smith says he enjoyed the experience and claims his facial hair is not a copy of Monsieur Chabal, but part of a growing trend among modern front rowers.

Smith said: 'there are quite a few quality beards floating around " mostly tightheads actually. It is just something I like.

'the World Cup was a pretty exciting experience, but it was just disappointing it finished when it did. Looking back though, it was pretty good.

'the subs are told before every game to just come on and try to make a difference. The boys on the bench were chewing their fingers a wee bit to just get on the pitch, do something and give the guys a lift."

Despite being scheduled to resume training at Edinburgh on Monday, the 18 stone prop is champing at the bit to reclaim his spot in the black and red and watched two training sessions during his two-week break away from The Castle.

He added: "I came in and watched a couple of sessions over the past two weeks and it was really exciting to come back in today.

"It was really good to get back up and running with the guys, especially after being out since last September-October since I got injured. So I am happy to be back running about with Edinburgh.

"It is pretty exciting to work with him and you can't help but learn from guys like him."
